Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born on November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to receive a score of 10 for an Olympic sport. Bela Karalyi was introduced to Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci would go on to become the gymnastics coach of Romania. Comaneci competed for the first time in the 1969 national junior championships, placing 13th. The following year she became champion. Her first competition in the international arena was in 1972, which was a pre Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she took home three gold medals while in 1973 and 1974 she was the junior all-around champion. She won against Russian Lyudmila Torishcheva. The five-time European Champion at her first senior international competition held in the year 1975.
